This was one of his easier 23 goals this year but Daryl Murphy was on target again for Ipswich

The Irish striker has now scored more league goals than any other player in England this season.

IT’S ARGUABLY THE hottest title race in Europe with just five points separating the top seven teams in the Championship and in today’s early kick-off there was a crunch game between Middlesbrough and Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich.

Despite Ireland striker Daryl Murphy scoring his 23rd league goal of the season, Boro ran out comfortable 4-1 winners as Ipswich’s promotion bid took a hit as they remain outside the play-off berths.

Murphy was named in Martin O’Neill’s extended squad for the forthcoming Euro Qualifier against Poland and on current form, he must be in the running to be involved at the Aviva Stadium.

The Tractor Boys remain a point adrift of sixth placed Brentford having played a game more after today’s disappointing result. They have now gone four games without a win.

Boro move back to the top of the standings as they took a significant step towards promotion with just nine games remaining.

Murphy was the only Irishman involved for Ipswich this afternoon with Noel Hunt out for the rest of the season, David McGoldrick still sidelined with a thigh injury while Stephen Hunt is also nursing a hamstring complaint.
