Daryl Murphy's stunner and how the rest of the Irish got on in the Championship

Dubliner Stephen Gleeson was on target as Birmingham won 3-0 away at Derby.

DARYL MURPHY’S STUNNING strike helped Ipswich earn a point at home to Preston this weekend.

The Ireland striker scored his eighth goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough to stop Ipswich from dropping to seventh in the table.

Jonathan Douglas also started for Mick McCarthy’s side, while Greg Cunningham, Alan Browne and Eoin Doyle all featured for Preston.

Darragh Lenihan played 80 minutes, as Blackburn were beaten 1-0 by a Richie Towell-less Brighton.

Former Ireland U21 player Derrick Williams helped Bristol City to a shock 1-0 over league leaders Middlesbrough.

Dubliner Stephen Gleeson was on target as Birmingham won 3-0 away at Derby. Cyrus Christie, Jeff Hendrick and Richard Keogh all featured for the Rams, who remain third following the loss.

Gleeson subsequently apologised to Derby fans, after celebrating in front of them, as his attempted cross fortuitously dropped into the net.

“I don’t know what’s up with me. I don’t score many goals and I kind of lost the plot a bit,” Gleeson told reporters.

I didn’t mean to do anything in front of them but I celebrated and then got booked for starting people throwing stuff.

“I never left the pitch so if the stewards have had a tough one there I apologise. But I didn’t mean any harm in it. I never should have gone to their fans.

“But I don’t score many and I do tend to lose the plot when I do.”

It wasn’t the best of days for Charlton goalkeeper Stephen Henderson, as his side conceded lost 6-0 against Hull, for whom David Meyler was an unused sub.

Darren Potter and Samir Carruthers both started as MK Dons won 1-0 against Reading, who had Stephen Quinn, Niall Keown and Simon Cox all on the bench, with the latter entering the action on 82 minutes.

Paul Green completed 90 minutes, as Rotherham were beaten 3-0 at home by QPR.

Joe Mason and Anthony Pilkington both started as Cardiff defeated Wolves 3-1 at Molineux, with Matt Doherty featuring for the hosts.

Finally, on Friday, Alan Judge’s 11th goal of the season was not enough, as Brentford lost 3-1 at home to Burnley.

Stephen Ward completed 90 minutes for the visitors, who are currently fourth in the table.
