Daryl Murphy just can't stop scoring. Scott Heavey/EMPICS Sport

Two of the most prolific strikers in English football right now are Irish

Eoin Doyle and Daryl Murphy both scored last night to continue their rich vein of form.

AS IPSWICH BEAT Cardiff 3-1 last night to keep their Premier League promotion hopes alive, two of English footballโ€™s hottest strikers went head to head. And they are both Irish.

When Cardiffโ€™s Eoin Doyle nodded home to equalise in the first half, he took his personal tally of league goals this season to 23.

The 27-year old, who scored 21 of those goals for Chesterfield in League One โ€” a streak that earned him a move to Cardiff in January โ€” has struggled for opportunities since moving to the Championship but now has two goals in his last five games as he begins to find his feet with his new club.

Such were Doyleโ€™s early season heroics, he remains the second highest scorer in English league football, second only to Daryl Murphy who found the net for Ipswich for the 24th time in the Championship this season.

Murphyโ€™s latest ensured all three points for Mick McCarthyโ€™s side and, coupled with the fact both Wolves and Brentford lost, means Ipswich are now three points clear of the aforementioned duo in sixth-spot.

Eh, yes we have. Shay Given, Paul McGrath, Ronnie Whelan, Niall Quinn, should I keep going?

How are they better servants? On a par maybe. Surely not better though.

Ronnie Whelan had a poor international career as did many of his contemporaries at Liverpool despite been world class players.

Jack didnโ€™t fancy Whelan, or anyone that was inclined to knock the ball around on the ground. Not that being in 2WC and EC squads is really that bad an international career, anyway.

Fair play! Nice to see a bit of humour. Those awards can be dire shite the best of times.

Robbie has the appearances record for Ireland and the goal scoring record for Ireland. In fact he has obliterated the goal scoring one. Always disappoints me that some people wonโ€™t give him the credit he deserves.

I wouldnโ€™t even mention Robbie Keane in the same breath as Paul Mc Grath, Kevin Moran, Ronnie Whelan or Liam Brady. Ok so he has the goal scoring record. Iโ€™d probably have it too if I had about 130 caps. I didnโ€™t bother check how much he has. Heโ€™s good at scoring off the field though. His wife isnโ€™t bad. Iโ€™ll probably get a pile of red thumbs for that but I donโ€™t care
