Daryl Kavanagh on joining Drogheda: 'I'm just looking forward to getting back playing again'

The striker recently took part in the FIFPro tournament in Norway in the hope of attracting some interest.

DROGHEDA UNITED HAVE announced the signing of striker Daryl Kavanagh from Sligo Rovers.

The 28-year-old played for Drogs in the Jim Malone Cup on Friday night, doing enough to earn a permanent move to Johnny McDonnell’s side. Former St Patrick’s Athletic striker Kavanagh expressed his delight at moving to United Park. ”I’m very happy to get the deal sorted,” Kavanagh told the club’s official website.

“It all happened very fast over the last couple of days but I was in contact with the club a few weeks ago and it went cold for one reason or another. Johnny called me again during the week to see how I was and once I heard Pete Mahon was coming in [as assistant manager], my mind was made up.”

Kavanagh was released by Sligo Rovers following a disappointing four-month spell, and played at the FIFPro Tournament in Norway in the hopes of finding a club. ”It was my third time taking part in the competition and I really enjoyed it,” Kavanagh said.

“I’ve seen it all before but perhaps this time was a little different as I was one of the older players but we performed brilliantly as a team and came as close as we have done to winning it. The one disappointment though was that nothing really came of it in terms of offers.

“To be honest, I didn’t have many offers. I expected something to come of the FIFPro tournament but it never materialised so I came back home and made sure I kept myself fit if a call came and Johnny followed through and I’m proud to be a Drogheda United player. I’m just looking forward to getting back playing again.”

Meanwhile, Dundalk have signed Under-19 forward Michael O’Connor on a professional contract. The former Bristol City trainee played for Stephen Kenny’s  squad in pre-season, and is looking forward to more experience with the senior team.

“I really feel great to have signed,” O’Connor told the club’s official website. “There’s no better feeling than to sign for your hometown club. There really isn’t. Pulling on the jersey and to line out is what I want to do. I’m really looking forward to it. All about experience and getting going.

“I am delighted to have signed, it’s great for me and hopefully I can kick on.”
