'I'm a small bit disappointed but he has his reasons': Horgan on Ireland omission

The 24-year-old wasn’t selected by Martin O’Neill for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

DUNDALK WINGER DARYL HORGAN has expressed his disappointment at not being named in Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland squad, but admitted that discussion of his inclusion shows ‘how far the league has come.’

The 24-year-old was named as SSE Airtricity League man of the match as the Lilywhites defeated Derry City 3-1 to move eight points clear at the top of the table, but Horgan’s thoughts did not stray far from the international team after the game.

“You’d always be a bit disappointed you don’t get in the Irish squad, but at the same time it’s shown how far the league has come that League of Ireland players are being pushed for it now,” Horgan told RTE.

“I suppose the European exploits are helping. Obviously I’m a small bit disappointed, but he has his reasons.”

Dundalk came from behind to secure three points, with Horgan impressed by how Stephen Kenny’s side responded to their 1-1 midweek draw with Shamrock Rovers.

“It was a really good performance right through the team,” the Galway native said.

“I thought we played well on Tuesday, but tonight we played with a real will to win and put in a good performance.

“I thought we started well, but it’s brilliant to get the goals back right off the bat. We really put the extra effort in for that 20 minutes. It was a great win.”
