Police investigate alleged racist tweet directed at Danny Welbeck

Striker scored winning goal in FA Cup clash against Manchester United, his former club, on Monday night.

GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE (GMP) are investigating an alleged racist message that was aimed at Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck following his winning goal against Manchester United in Monday’s FA Cup quarter-final.

Members of the public contacted the authorities to complain and police then began looking into the matter.

The 24 year-old, who was at United for 13 years before joining the North London side last September, also received death threats after he grabbed Arsenal’s second goal in the 61st minute of last night’s clash at Old Trafford.

A spokesperson for the GMP told the Manchester Evening News:

“We are aware of it and we are investigating”.

It follows on from the deeply unsettling and widely condemned incident at a Paris metro station last month when a group of Chelsea supporters prevented a black man from boarding a train before singing songs boasting of their racism.
