'Shane Long? Really?! No, no, no, no, no' - Danny Murphy makes his feelings clear on Liverpool rumours

Former Reds midfielder is not impressed with talk linking the Ireland striker with a move to Anfield.

FORMER LIVERPOOL MIDFIELDER Danny Murphy believes the Reds would be making a massive mistake if they were to sign Southampton striker Shane Long.

The Ireland international has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield in recent days. Speculation ramped up over the weekend after Long’s employers confirmed the signing of QPR striker Charlie Austin.

Southampton have reportedly rejected an offer of £8m (€10.5m) for the Tipperary man although neither club would confirm that an official enquiry has been made.

“Shane Long? Really?! No, no, no, no, no,” was Murphy’s reaction to the rumours on TalkSport today.

“There’s no point bringing in players who aren’t better than what you’ve already got.

“Would you suggest Long is a better player than Benteke? I don’t think so.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to find the net against Manchester United on Sunday despite dominating the game, which is becoming a worrying trend for fans. And that has fuelled more desperate calls for Klopp to spend on a striker before the January transfer window shuts.

Christian Benteke seems to be out of favour with Klopp; he wasn’t introduced until the 81st minute yesterday, moments after Wayne Rooney scored the match-winner at the other end.

Murphy feels Benteke is capable of leading the line at Anfield but Liverpool must tailor their game-plan to suit the big Belgian.

“Liverpool have to play Benteke and use him better,” Murphy said.

“I was surprised how long it took for Klopp to bring Benteke on.

“The way Liverpool are playing at the moment isn’t really suited to what Benteke is good at…yet he’s still their top goalscorer. You have to play to his strengths.”
