But this young Roscommon group, with 13 players featuring in their first Connacht final and nine of those aged 23 or under, showed character to fight back from two points behind to draw level late on.
Galway poacher Danny Cummins, who scored three points from play, got the nod from RTÉ’s Sunday Game pundits Tomas O Sé and Ciaran Whelan last night to claim the man-of-the-match award.
The other nominees were Cummins’s team-mate Declan Kyne and Roscommon midfielder Niall Daly.
