Shanahan brothers help Lismore to comprehensive Waterford intermediate final victory

A Munster quarter-final awaits on Sunday for Lismore.

MAURICE SHANAHAN SCORED 2 -8 and his brother Dan also hit the net twice as Lismore ran out 5 – 19 to 1 – 7 winners over Dunhill in this evening’s Waterford intermediate hurling final in Fraher Field.

Dunhill found themselves up against it as early as the first minute when Maurice opened the scoring with a goal.

The sides were level thanks to a Shane Casey goal after six minutes, but Dan Shanahan struck a minute later to re-open a three point lead and from there Jack Prendergast had Lismore humming.

By half-time it was 4 – 12 to 1 -4 after Maurice Shanahan and Prendergast raised green flags to kill off Dunhill hope.

And with 10 minutes to go, Dan completed a night of many goals with Lismore’s fifth to ensure they return to senior hurling next year, a level at which they twice reached county finals this century, but lost out in 2001 and 2009.

There isn’t likely to be much in the way of celebration for Lismore tonight however, as they now advance to the Munster intermediate quarter-final against Bandon which is scheduled for 14.00 this Sunday in Cloughduv.
