Irish defender joins Bohs after four years with Sunderland

Dan Casey has returned to Ireland to sign for Keith Long’s side.

BOHEMIANS HAVE ANNOUNCED the signing of Ireland underage international Dan Casey after he impressed during Saturday’s friendly against FC United of Manchester.

The 19-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a deal with the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division outfit after spending four years in England with Sunderland.

Casey moved to the Stadium of Light in July 2013 from St Joseph’s Boys and featured for the club’s underage teams during his time with the Black Cats.

The defender has now returned home and Bohs hope to have Casey available for Friday’s trip to Finn Harps.

“I’ve known Dan since he was with St Joseph’s. He was a very sought-after player before going over to Sunderland,” Bohs manager Keith Long said.

“I’m delighted to sign him. He’s a big, powerful lad. He’s a player who I believe will be a good addition to the squad.

“We’ve got someone coming home who is hungry to succeed and who wants to play.

“He’s had four years as a young pro at Sunderland and has played at Under-23 level there. Now he wants first-team football.

“I think we’ve got someone who feels he’s got a bit of a point to prove and I believe he will do that at Dalymount.”

Would be cool to see an Irish team at these games, maybe once the opportunity for exposure and competition for our athletes outweighs the negative associations of our past.

@Seanie Bourke: Well I suppose the REPUBLIC of South Africa is there. Yeah I’ve a fair idea, it’s former dominions and colonies that have been invented to be part of a union of nations and as a result part of the commonwealth games. They relinquished control of most of those countries at least 50 or so years ago but they still take part. Some opt out such as Ireland & Zimbabwe etc… but you have more that take part where the Brits have no control at all – India, Pakistan, Singapore. Obviously would never happen because of our past with them but would be cool nonetheless
