GREAT BRITAIN AND Ireland sealed a memorable Curtis Cup victory this afternoon, seeing off the United States to regain the trophy for just the second time in 10 encounters at Dún Laoghaire Golf Club.

After taking a commanding 8-4 lead into the final day, the home side did the necessary on Sunday and collected the two and a half points they required from the singles matches.

GB and Ireland did lose the singles 4.5 to 3.5 but had done enough over the previous two days to wrestle the trophy back from America’s grasp, 11.5 to 8.5.

Leona Maguire, the world number two, once again played a pivotal role as her 3&2 win over Sierra Brooks set the hosts on their way.

Olivia Mehaffey earned a valuable point before the winning moment came courtesy of Meghan McLaren’s triumph over Bethany Wu.

It is the second time in three editions GB and Ireland have won the biennial match which sees the cream of amateur talent from both sides of the Atlantic go head-to-head.

For the Irish trio of Maria Dunne, Maguire and Mehaffey, it was an even sweeter victory in front of a large home crowd in Enniskerry.

Dunne was beaten in the final match of the day but it will do little to dampen the celebrations following victory in the 39th Curtis Cup.
