Dana White blasts ref for late stoppage in Cerrone's welterweight debut

Triangle choke gives Cerrone quick win against Oliveira in Pittsburgh.

Updated 09.05

DONALD ‘COWBOY’ CERRONE made quick work of his welterweight debut, stopping Alex Oliveira with a first-round submission at UFC Fight Night 83.

But there was controversy as referee Mario Yamasaki missed the fact that Oliveira had tapped out and failed to stop the Pittsburgh main event immediately.

UFC boss Dana White was furious and blasted Yamasaki, who only stepped in to break the triangle choke when Cerrone drew his attention to the taps.

White tweeted: “10 taps before Yamasaki stops it after @Cowboycerrone tells him!!! And he was looking right at it……WOW!!!!!”

Yamasaki was earlier criticised for an indecisive stoppage in Cody Garbrandt’s win over Augusto Mendes. The referee moved to step in when Garbrandt knocked down Mendes in the first, but then backed off and allowed Garbrandt to land more punches before waving the fight off seconds later.

Cerrone pocketed the $50,000 Performance of the Night for the stoppage after just 2:33, his 10th stoppage in the UFC in what was his 30th fight under the UFC/WEC banner.

“I get to do [155] and [170] now, so if you wanna get hurt, I know a guy,” the former lightweight title challenger said.

Elsewhere on the main card there were wins for Derek Brunson, Cody Garbrandt, Dennis Bermudez, Chris Camozzi and James Krause.
