LIVERPOOL PRODUCED AN incisive attacking display to make the most of some dreadful defending from Manchester City and pick up a 4-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium.
Jurgen Kloppโs side were clinical on the counter-attack, racing into a three-goal lead that brought an end to a run of six Premier League matches away at City without a win.
Eliaquim Mangala โ brought into the centre of defence along with Martin Demichelis as two of Manuel Pellegriniโs four changes โ opened the scoring with an own goal early on, setting the tone for a dismal defensive display.
Philippe Coutinho scored his fourth goal in five top-flight appearances against City to double Liverpoolโs advantage, with Roberto Firmino โ in for Christian Benteke as one of Kloppโs three changes โ adding the third in sensational fashion.
Making his return after a seven-week absence, Sergio Aguero brilliantly pulled one back for City shortly before the interval, but they were unable to push on in the second half.
Their misery was compounded nine minutes from time when Martin Skrtel blasted past Joe Hart from the edge of the box, meaning City now sit third behind rivals Manchester United and shock leaders Leicester City.
Mangala got off to a poor start on his return to the starting line-up, putting the ball into the back of his own net off a cutback from Firmino, though Bacary Sagna was partly culpable having lost possession beforehand.
Liverpool grabbed their second when a mix-up between Mangala and Aleksandar Kolarov was capitalised upon by Firmino, racing through and picking out Coutinho with a sublime pass which he slid between Hartโs legs.
In contrast, Liverpoolโs defence was proving extremely resilient and their counter-attacking play continued to trouble Pellegriniโs side.
Another break led to their third shortly after the half-hour mark, when Emre Canโs backheel set Coutinho in behind the defence and he squared for Firmino to round off an exquisite move with the simplest of finishes.
The former Hoffenheim forward came close to adding to his tally twice in quick succession soon after, first being denied by a good save from Hart before firing narrowly wide nine minutes before the break.
Aguero gave City a lifeline two minutes before the interval when he curled home an exceptional finish from 25 yards, becoming the highest-scoring South American in Premier League history with his 85th goal.
Pellegrini replaced Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas with Fernandinho and Fabian Delph for the second half in a bid to add more solidity to his team.
However, it compromised their creativity and they were carved open once again on the hour-mark, but Hart made a vital save to deny Firmino once more.
Kloppโs side suffered a wobble moments later, Simon Mignolet forced into a diving save to keep Aguero at bay before Fernandinho skied an effort from six yards out off a set-piece delivery.
Skrtel fired home a powerful fourth from just inside the box and Cityโs day was summed up when Raheem Sterling โ facing his former employers โ failed to make contact with the goal at his mercy as Liverpool moved up to ninth.
Please all read your season ticket holder email. Leinster rugby are urging any and all fans to bring a pair of boots and gum shield to the RDS on Sunday.
Crap. Speedy Recovery, Marty.
Bent has pretty much gone down the road of being a lose head. He is no longer considered a TH.
Lose head? Thatโs a bit harsh
I really wonder if Leinsterโs front-row players were adequately prepared during pre-season training, at the province, for the season ahead.
The Ireland set-up may have to take more direct control of Irish playersโ pre-season preparations next year, as Leinsterโs pre-season preparation has clearly been a disaster which is unravelling all too soon.
Its hardly time for conspiracy theories John. Weโve just go unlucky with a few injuries, really canโt blame Matt OโConnor for that.
Interesting article by Neil Francis in Sunday Indo yesterday. Rugby players popping hamstrings and shoulders like popcorn in last few months โ down to the weights program -too much muscle bulk and strain and something has to give โฆ Cian Healyโs hamstring apparently is a catastrophic rupture which is highly irregular and very like the injury Straus suffered. He may also be blowing crap โฆ

Something must be wrong. If agree with Francis, thereโs no need for Healy to be packing on the beef to the extent heโs done
Neil Francis is not a doctor, physio or authority on anything to do with anatomy, strength or conditioning. There are highly qualified s&c coaches, physios and doctors managing the players. They know far better than Franno what players should and shouldnโt be doing with their weight, gym, exertion etc.
Yes rugby is becoming more physical but weโre going through an incredibly unlucky period. That will change.
I doubt that John. Munster are having a similar issue at hookerโฆ
Francis is anti rugby and loves to slate the sport. He has no backround in any of the stuff he harps on about and anyone who believes a word out of his mouth more than likely believes Santa is real.
Ah Fer FFss
Luke Fitzgerald,Cian Healy,Sean oโbrien,Marty Moore,itโs just one significant injury after another for Leinster. Very very frustrating.
All Provinces pick up injuries. Ulster without Touhy,Pienaar,Henderson,Jackson,Marshall. Every club gets its turn.
I knowโฆ I follow Leinsterโฆ
No province can compete against the top French teams without all their top players.
Andrew Warwick is a player to keep an eye on. Never disappoints and can hold up both ends of the scrum and even shift a bit in the loose.
Fitzpatrick has started one game for Ulster all season which was a defeat against Zebre. Archer was very impressive in the wins against Scarlets and also against Leinster. Itโll be an easy choice for Archer who would be a much better investment as he is about years younger than Fitzpatrick who is also very injury prone and constantly battles with his fitness. Very good scrummager though.
White for Ireland!!!!!!!!!!!
Sh|te :(
Who will come in on the bench lads? Itโs probably between Fitzpatrick and Archer, with White an outside bet. Would any Ulster and Munster fans be willing to fill me in on their player form wise?
Will be much clearer for Deccie Fitzpatrick after the Leicester game. Looking forward to him putting in a big shift.
Surely he wont be playing though? Herbst has started all but one game this season. Why would Doak suddenly bring him in to play Tigers.
Off the benchโฆ.
โheโs damaged his *laburnum* nowโ
Interesting to hear that Moore has damaged a small tree!
