As it happened: Cork v Waterford, Munster senior hurling semi-final

Two of the great rivals of the modern era battle it out for a place in the Munster final.

There’s a place in the Munster senior hurling final at stake today in Thurles, folks. Welcome along to our liveblog for the clash of Cork and Waterford.

The big team news this week from a Cork perspective is the return of All-Star defender Brian Murphy. Just over a week after returning to the panel, the former Young Hurler of the Year has been catapulted into the Rebels’ starting line-up for the first time in 21 months. Here’s how Cork are set to line out, although the word from Thurles is that there are still doubts over Seamus Harnedy’s fitness…

Cork: Anthony Nash; Shane O’Neill, Stephen McDonnell, Brian Murphy; Damien Cahalane, Mark Ellis, Cormac Murphy; Daniel Kearney, Aidan Walsh; Conor Lehane, Seamus Harnedy, Bill Cooper; Alan Cadogan, Luke O’Farrell, Patrick Horgan. Subs: Patrick Collins, William Kearney, Killian Burke, Aidan Ryan, Patrick Cronin, Brian Lawton, Rob O’Shea, Darren McCarthy, Stephen Moylan, Paudie O’Sullivan, Jamie Coughlan.

Cork fans, are you confident that’s a team capable of reversing the Allianz League final defeat to the Deise last month?

Of course, Waterford are without star forward Pauric Mahony, who’s in the early stages of his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament tear. Here’s the team named by manager Derek McGrath:

Waterford: Stephen O’Keeffe; Shane Fives, Barry Coughlan, Noel Connors; Tadhg de Búrca, Austin Gleeson, Philip Mahony; Jamie Barron, Tom Devine; Kevin Moran, Stephen Bennett, Jake Dillon; Brian O’Halloran, Michael Walsh, Colin Dunford. Subs: Ian O’Regan, Shane McNulty, Paudie Prendergast, Stephen Daniels, Eddie Barrett, Maurice Shanahan, Shane Bennett, Shane O’Sullivan, Martin O’Neill, Patrick Curran, Michael Kearney.

Can Waterford make it back-to-back competitive wins in 2015 over their neighbours?

Cork are out on the field and Seamus Harnedy is taking a full part in the warm-up, which bodes well for Rebels fans.

Our columnist John Gardiner is looking forward to this one…

In the absence of Pauric Mahony, Waterford manager Derek McGrath has confirmed that Maurice Shanahan will be on free-taking duty.

You have to feel for Waterford’s Pauric Mahony today. Just a few weeks after playing a starring role in his side’s Allianz League final win against Cork at Semple Stadium, he’s back in Thurles today but watching on from the sidelines.

He spoke to RTÉ’s Clare McNamara earlier: “Maurice [Shanahan] is there, he’ll step up to the plate today hopefully with the frees. There’s plenty of lads there and plenty of goal threats as well.

“I don’t really think there’s any magic gameplan that Waterford have adopted over the last few games. It’s just down to hard work. If that means you find yourself back in the half-back line trying to win ball then that’s what you have to do.”

One change to the Waterford team that was named this week. Maurice Shanahan will start instead of Tom Devine. One change for Cork too. Patrick Cronin is in, Seamus Harnedy is out.
