A THIRD WIN in three games saw Cork City move to second place in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division on Friday night.

Karl Sheppard’s 25th-minute goal — his third consecutive game to find the net — was enough for John Caulfield’s side, who had beaten Finn Harps last Friday and then Shamrock Rovers on Monday. Taking a pass from Garry Buckley, who had won the ball well, Sheppard’s low shot from the left deflected off Michael Barker and looped over Patrick Jennings’ dive, nestling in the net with the help of a post.
Prior to that, the hosts had had the better of the play without really testing Jennings, while after the goal, Seán Maguire and Steven Beattie both had great chances but their finishing let them down.
Pat’s found the City rearguard difficult to pierce, though former City defender Darren Dennehy did threaten from a couple of corners. In the second period though, it was almost all City, even if a second goal always looked more aspirational than anything.
Sheppard, Maguire and sub Mark O’Sullivan had half-chances, but in the end, one goal was enough.
CORK CITY: Mark McNulty; John Dunleavy, Alan Bennett, Kenny Browne, Kevin O’Connor; Gearóid Morrissey, Greg Bolger; Steven Beattie (Danny Morrissey 81), Garry Buckley, Karl Sheppard (Colin Healy 90); Seán Maguire (Mark O’Sullivan 74).
ST PATRICK’S ATHLETIC: Patrick Jennings; Michael Barker, Seán Hoare, Darren Dennehy, Ian Bermingham; Shane McEleney (Graham Kelly 75), David Cawley; Conan Byrne (Keith Treacy 62), Mark Timlin, Billy Dennehy; Dinny Corcoran (Jamie McGrath 62).
Referee: Derek Tomney (Dublin).
