A REPLAY WILL be needed to determine the Cork SFC champions after Nemo Rangers finished strongly to secure a draw against Castlehaven at Páirc Uí Rinn today.
The Haven, champions in 2012 and ’13, looked to be set for a third title in four years when three unanswered points from Brian Hurley, Michael Hurley and Mark Collins put them 0-10 to 0-8 with 11 minutes left.
Instead of pushing on further, however, the west Cork side wouldn’t score again. Barry O’Driscoll brought Nemo back to within a point and, after goalkeeper Micheál Martin made a great save to deny Brian Hurley, Dylan Mehigan tied matters in the 58th minute.
Both sides had chances in the closing minutes and Nemo lost captain Paul Kerrigan to a second yellow card, but a winner couldn’t be found and a replay will be required for the first time since 1999, when Nemo lost to UCC.
The first half had two distinct periods of dominance, James Masters impressing as Nemo opened up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead, but then Castlehaven got on top at midfield and Mark Collins scored twice in a five-point streak which saw them move two points ahead, with 0-7 to 0-5 the half-time lead.
Nemo weren’t going to let them away, though, and two Kerrigan points sandwiched one from O’Driscoll as the city club moved back in front early in the second half. The to-and-fro nature continued as the Haven seized the upper hand, but in the end both had to be content with the draw. A date for the replay will be announced in the coming days.
