REIGNING CHAMPIONS LIMERICK held on to claim a two-point victory over Cork in tonight’s Electric Ireland Munster minor hurling semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds.

A late Shane Kingston goal, his second of the match, cut the deficit that Cork faced to two points but they were unable to draw level in injury-time and Limerick now advance to face Waterford in the final in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on July 13th.

The result means that both Munster senior and minor hurling finals will be a repeat of their 2013 pairings as Limerick take on Cork in the senior decider.

A powerful third quarter display was key to Limerick’s success tonight and the scoring contributions of Colin Ryan, Tom Morrissey, Peter Casey and Ronan Lynch were all key as they built on their opening round win over Tipperary.

The first-half was held up due to injuries to Cork players Shane O’Brien and Darren Casey but the Rebels battled on with Alan O’Callaghan sending them into a 0-5 to 0-3 lead by the 17th minute.

Limerick bounced back and the teams were level at 0-7 apiece approaching half-time before Kingston – son of Cork senior hurling coach Kieran – pounced for a vital goal for the away team. Yet Limerick drew level at the interval thanks to points from Morrissey and Ryan (2).

Limerick exploded from the blocks early in the second-half to reel off five unanswered points with Morrissey the scoring star in attack. They were 0-16 to 1-8 clear by the 36th minute and would never relinquish that lead for the remainder of the game.

Cork suffered a setback when O’Callaghan’s 39th minute penalty was saved by Eoghan McNamara but Cork did cut the gap to three points – 0-18 to 1-12 – with just twelve minutes remaining.

Limerick upped the ante once more with Ryan and Lynch (2) on target to restore their commanding position. A late Peter Casey point looked to have sealed their victory and despite a late scare with the concession of that Kingston goal, they held on for the win.

Scorers for Limerick: Colin Ryan 0-7 (0-6f), Tom Morrissey 0-5, Peter Casey, Ronan Lynch (0-2f, 0-1 ’65) 0-3 each, Seamus Flanagan 0-2, Cian Lynch, Ryan Hanley, Conor Fitzgerald 0-1 each.

Scorers for Cork: Shane Kingston 2-3, Sean Hayes 0-4 (0-3f), Alan O’Callaghan (0-2f, 0-1 ’65), Dayne Lee 0-3 each, Luke Meade, Tomas O’Connor 0-1 each.
