TWO LATE POINTS from Daniel Goulding got Peadar Healy’s reign as Cork manager off to a winning start against Limerick at Mallow in the McGrath Cup today.
The hosts had fallen behind for the first time as unanswered points from Danny Neville (two) and James Naughton gave Limerick a 0-12 to 1-8 lead with 10 minutes left.
When Goulding missed a scoreable free, it looked like it wouldn’t be Cork’s day but the full-forward then nailed a long-range free before fisting over in the 69th minute.
While Limerick had the majority of the possession in injury time, they were unable to engineer a scoring chance before the whistle and the Rebels took the two points, meaning victory over Waterford next week would guarantee them a place in the final.

New manager Healy will expect an improvement in performance, though, as better shooting from Limerick – they had 11 wides in total, seven in the second half – would have punished Cork.
They looked to be coasting when Kevin O’Driscoll netted with a low shot to open up a 1-3 to 0-2 lead in the 14th minute, all the more so when Limerick’s Seánie Buckley shot wide with a penalty on 19.

The visitors would score five of the remaining first-half points, with Seán McSweeney and Stephen Kelly impressive, to trail by one, 1-5 to 0-7, at half-time and Brian Fanning levelled early in the second half.
Cork were labouring, though Dan Mac Eoin did kick two points, but Limerick couldn’t take advantage until the closing stages. When it mattered, though, Goulding had the decisive say.
