Cork 2-22
Kilkenny 2-23
CORK CAME AGONISINGLY close to their first Allianz Hurling League Division 1A points of the season at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday evening but were ultimately denied by a strong Kilkenny finish.
With six minutes of normal time left, Cork were 2-20 to 0-20 in front, but TJ Reid’s 12th point for Kilkenny was followed by two goals in quick succession, from Colin Fennelly and Reid, with a Lester Ryan point helping them to push two in front.
The hosts – playing in blue shirts like those worn a century ago – had battled hard all night though and that continued as two Conor Lehane points looked to have secured a draw.
However, there was still time for more drama and Kilkenny sub John Power got the winner when a loose clearance from Cork goalkeeper Patrick Collins fell to him and he sent it over the bar.
Cork had led by four points, 1-11 to 0-10, after what was a very good first-half performance.
Séamus Harnedy at full-forward was excellent for the Rebels and it was his goal which had helped them to open up what was a seven-point lead at one stage.
However, Reid and Walter Walsh helped Kilkenny to eat into that and they pushed ahead early in the second half.
Instead of Cork wilting, they came again as Bill Cooper’s goal – a rebound after Harnedy had again done brilliantly – put them back in front. It was not to be, however.
Cork are condemned to a relegation playoff as Kilkenny march on to the last four.

No disrespect to Nina Carberry but wtf does Katie Taylor need to do to get some recognition. Arguably the best athlete, male or female, we have ever produced.
I was coming in here to write exactly what you said. I think it is an absolute joke that Taylor can’t even win the Female award let alone the overall one. Does she really have to win Gold on the Olympics just to get some recognition? I think there’s a very strong case to say she’s the greatest athlete this country has produced. Can’t remember the exact top 10 greatest list compiled the last time but Stephen Roche wasn’t even in it if Im not mistaken. Bit of a joke considering what him and Taylor have achieved.
I hope she thanked the horses who did all the running…
