It was a fantastic afternoon of football in the sun.

Before and during the game, the late Derry captain Ryan McBride was remembered accordingly.

The 27-year-old died suddenly on Sunday, just hours after leading his team to a 4-0 win over Drogheda United, and was laid to rest in Derry on Thursday.

Both sides paid their respects before kick-off with a minute’s silence, and Dundalk warmed up in number 5 jerseys in his honour.

There was also a moment’s applause during the 5th minute, and both sides donned black armbands.

As the clock ran down, Dundalk pulled a goal back following a double-blow in the first half from Karl Sheppard.

Substitute David McMillan slotted home an impressive effort on 72 minutes, and the game is now well and truly on. Stephen Kenny’s side were also reduced to ten men towards the end as Ciaran Kilduff was given a second yellow card.

Earlier in the game, Sheppard was on the end of a well-worked team goal to put John Caulfield’s side one up, and a follow-up from the same goalscorer doubled their lead before half-time.

Karl Sheppard hit the back of the net in the 23rd minute following an impressive run and cross by Seanie Maguire. It all began as they broke on the counter-attack from a Dundalk corner.

The two linked up again on 37 minutes, as Sheppard capitalised on Gary Rogers’ mistake following Maguire’s ball in. He easily rounded him and again tapped the ball into the back of the net.
