Cork 0-21
Clare 1-11
Denis Hurley reports from Páirc Uí Rinn
CORK ACHIEVED THEIR first regular-season Allianz HL Division 1A win since March 2015 as they pulled away from Clare in the second half at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday evening.
Having played well for much of the first half, the home side found themselves leading by just two points, 0-8 to 1-3, at half-time after Podge Collins’ goal for the reigning champions just before the break.
That Clare didn’t forge ahead on the resumption was largely down to Cork goalkeeper Anthony Nash, who saved a Tony Kelly penalty and the Aron Shanagher follow-up, with Cork then going on to get five of the next six points, the victory never really in doubt after that.
Stand-in captain Alan Cadogan excelled for Cork in the first half, scoring four points, and that tally would be matched in the second by his Douglas clubmate Shane Kingston, one of five starters making their debuts.
Daniel Kearney was outstanding throughout at midfield, scoring two points, while two more debutants, Luke Meade and Darragh Fitzgibbon, made their mark too.
The defenders making their bows, David Griffin and Mark Coleman, made important interventions too, while Colm Spillane, who missed last year with a cruciate injury, did well apart from the concession of the penalty.
A flurry of late Tony Kelly points gave him a personal tally of six and debutant Aron Shanagher might have had a first-half goal, but the Banner will need a big improvement ahead of the home game with Kilkenny next week while Cork will hope to build on their momentum when they welcome Dublin.
Scorers for Cork: Patrick Horgan 0-5 (0-4 frees), Shane Kingston, Alan Cadogan 0-4 each, Daniel Kearney, Luke Meade 0-2 each, Séamus Harnedy, Bill Cooper, Darragh Fitzgibbon, Dean Brosnan 0-1 each.
Scorers for Clare: Tony Kelly 0-6, Podge Collins 1-1, David Reidy 0-2f, Aron Shanagher, John Conlon 0-1 each.

Can’t believe the Ballyea boys played in this game!
What’s story with Tony Kelly playing colleges and league matches for county so close to club AI .
John Carroll Corks most negative citizen. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
John Carroll hasn’t a clue…the big eejit
@Patrick their is a big difference between the truth and negativity were you even at the game?if you were you would see this was poor game at best despite the good performance from the young guys Cork have a long way to go saying otherwise is a load of bollox.Off to the Glen with ya.
Are u still here talking rubbish…and your go to line is off to the place you come from. Off to the glen for Patrick, off to limerick for me…where are u off to john, what hole are u from? Are u even a cork man? Off to bed like a good man and stop talking about hurling cause you know fanny all
First of your showing your intelligence with the insults. No need for it. Secondly I’m not from the glen. Thirdly you mentioned cork would be beaten easily enough, they were not. You should support what cork have and put away the negativity. We are not blessed with the strongest players at the moment but already that result is somewhat better than last year. Oh and yes I watched the game
Apologies actually I misread the insult part
Watched the game on to that is
Hell im losing it now and starting to ramble. On tv.
@Patrick what the hell r u on?you posted first and insulted me and yes i said Clare would win justified i think with the strong team they were puting out and bringing the Ballyea lads in especially T Kelly showed how much they wanted to win it and Cork with a very young and inexperienced side it was a fair assumption id say. And by the way I meant the Glen not the Glen Rovers.
Happy with that tonight a decent performance by a lot of them especially the younger guys. Lack of a real goal threat again which is still a worry but can definitely sense some changes have happened in mentality and work rate from last year. That said I don’t think Clare were at the races tonight tougher tasks to come.
+ 1. My reading of it exactly. Signs of little green shoots. . But a long challenging road ahead.
Great to see the scores spread out. When we score 21 points we’re used to Hoggie chalkin up 13-16 of them. Early in the year so hard to know but surely things cant be worse than last year!!!!
Clare were very poor tonight. Cork took the Munster league serious unlike all the other counties. We are a month further down the line than Clare are. Unfortunately by the summer the rest of Munster will have caught up. We still cannot win the ball in the air. It progress but I won’t be getting my hopes up
Honest post. I think both cork and limerick both had a good crack off the monster league. Corks performance this evening gives me hope limerick can beat Wexford tomorrow. Should be a good Munster championship, cork will need significant improvement to best tipp, with the semi final v Waterford another cracker. Clare and limerick should also be a cracking match.
We can’t catch a ball again..good win but you have to be able to catch a ball..still worry for championship
You would be right to worry. Tipp will be a different level come championship.
You are right. But although the jerseys are similar that was Clare .
Your right. Although the jerseys might be the same, that was Clare.
Apologies good sir. What I had intended to post was come championship Corks opponent Tipp will be a different level which Cork would be unable to match. Cork are n the same category as Dublin, Wexford, Clare and limerick at the moment. I fear Waterford, tipp, Kilkenny and Galway are just that bit ahead. In saying that great to see Cork finally showing signs of improvement. For such a great hurling county the last few years has been very poor.
Sorry. I was just being sarcastic. Can’t help myself. I do agree with you some what. Unfortunately I always have my doubts about people who say Waterford and Galway. Neither have won anything for a while. Particularly Waterford. Tipp, probably one the beer for the last 12 months celebrating. Back to back ain’t their thing. Still agree though they are all still ahead though. But glad to see an improvement. Tipp and Kilkenny are the ones to watch.
Your on the ball paul. Waterford and Galway are in the mix but until they get over the line there will always be doubt. Your also right about tipp. They have proven to be fragile going for 2 in a row. I think tipp this year will have the answers but time will tell. Roll on a great year of hurling.
Tipp only won the all Ireland 5 months ago, how are they on the beer 12 months celebrating exactly?
Because I’m on the beer all day ??
Tipp won an all-ireland while on the beer?god help the rest of us if they ever take it seriously.
I think we have a lot of improving to do but very happy with what I saw especially with the new additions.I think we will beat the dubs then we are safe and we will have some great matches to prepare for the championship.I wouldn’t be worried if I was a Clare fan think they will beat dubs and stay up and they have limerick who they can beat and they are in the Munster final where u want to be.
Clare should’ve been out the gate with the amount of goal chances they missed…
@John williams Truth hurts i suppose.Time will tell who is right or wrong and sure the best you can do is sling insults and you cant even say exactly what i am wrong about???your the one that needs a sleep but doubt that you can afford to do that in a doorway!!!
@John williams I will stand over everthing i said,Clare were almost at full strength tonight except for David Mac and Colm Galvin.Aron cunnigham came on and should be a starter too.Corks young hurlers all did well.Colm Spillane has been tried before and isnt good enough.Cork at the moment are missing almost all positions up the centre to have any chance of wining a Munster championship. Now back to limerick williams you big gob shite you havent a clue.
@John Carroll:@John Carroll: what game were you watching Colm Spillane had a great game ? He had no choice but to take Collins down for the penalty you’re a deluded man
Stand over it all u like…your still wrong, has it not hit home with you yet. I hope ur not involved in ur club cause u know fanny all about hurling…
Conor McGrath was also missing, one of there best forwards. I watched the second half and coming from a tipp man, Clare were all over cork backs but missed so much. I always liked the forwards Cork have, but to me there back line in the worst in Munster, minus Kerry of course.
From a cork man stop talking tripe
@John Williams wrong about what exactly? You werent even at the game trot on limerick you deluded fool you know shite all about hurling.
@shane sorry to say but spillane is no where near good enough please read Jack fogartys comment.
I’m inclined to agree with that. Cork forwards are decent and will clock up decent scores. But there are weaknesses from midfield back that if they are not sorted will leave Cork vulnerable in most game. That aside, a positive start. Were already in a much better place than this time ladt year.
@johncarroll…why do u keep bringing limerick into it for u cabbage head. I watched the game….do u not understand your talking rubbish, people are red thumbing the life outta you and you still think your right. U havent a notion. Have a good lie in today u need it pet
