ARGENTINA LEAPFROGGED URUGUAY to the top of Group B with a 1-0 victory over their South-American neighbours last night.
Argentina had been criticised for letting a two-goal lead slip against Paraguay in their opening game of the tournament so a win over Uruguay was imperative.
Sergio Aguero netted the only goal of a heated encounter 10 minutes into the second half, and Argentina’s defence held strong to secure all three points from thereon in.
A tight first half saw Argentinian coach Gerardo Martino sent off for arguing that Uruguay’s Nicolas Lodeiro’s punishment for a foul was too lenient, as the midfielder escaped with a yellow card.

Bordeaux striker Diego Rolán was the liveliest of the Uruguayan front line throughout, getting on the end of three good chances but failing to convert.
Aguero made the breakthrough in the 56th minute however, after Javier Pastore showed some silky footwork to open up a bit of space for Pablo Zabaleta to cross in for his Manchester City club-mate, who finished well with a diving header.
Sergio Romero mad two good saves to deny both Abel Hernández and Rolán late on, with the latter also having a shot cleared off the line.
The game was marred by a succession of fouls, with six yellow cards being shown and numerous scuffles breaking out on the pitch.
The night’s other game saw Paraguay edge past Jamaica in somewhat comical fashion. Paraguay needed a win to ensure that they would finish with at least a third-place finish and they secured that courtesy of an Edgar Benitez goal.
The winner came in the 36th minute in completely inadvertent fashion as Jamaican goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr rushed from his area to clear a long ball with a header, but headed straight into the thigh of Benitez and the ball looped over the keeper and into an empty net.
Paraguay now sit level with Argentina at the top of Group B with four points, while Uruguay are in third on three points with Jamaica lying bottom of the group without a single point.
