CONOR MCGREGOR HAS sparked furious speculation about his imminent retirement with a tweet suggesting that he is ready to quit the Octagon.

“I have decided to retire young,” the UFC superstar tweeted just before 7.30pm Irish time.

“Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya’s (sic) later.”

McGregor, the reigning UFC featherweight champion, is scheduled to face Nate Diaz on 9 July where he will bid to avenge the only loss of his explosive UFC career.

His message sent MMA fans into a spin this evening as they tried to work out if the tweet was legitimate, or if it was a hoax or a marketing ploy by the Notorious.

McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh appeared to back up the retirement rumours when he cryptically tweeted, “Well (it) was fun while it lasted,” while respected UFC journalist Ariel Helwani reported that the Dubliner’s intentions appeared to be sincere.

“Multiple sources are adamant at this time that McGregor’s tweet isn’t a joke, troll job or hoax of any kind,” Helwani wrote. “Reason(s) behind it is unclear.”

The42‘s requests for comment from McGregor’s representatives and team were unanswered at the time of writing.
