Glass rewarded with contract extension just two weeks after blistering AFL debut

The Derry youngster has signed a two-year extension at Hawthorn.

DERRY YOUNGSTER CONOR Glass has been rewarded with a contract extension at Hawthorn, keeping the former Oak Leaf minor captain at the Melbourne club until 2019.

The 19-year-old made his AFL debut just two weeks ago, when he came off the bench to star in his side’s 100-48 win over Fremantle.

The international rookie announced his arrival on the scene immediately and impressed throughout, completing a team-high 93% of his 15 disposals, claiming eight intercepts and five marks during an impressive maiden outing.

Hawthorn fans were seriously impressed by his Glass’ efforts and took to social media to rage about the talent.

Following his impressive performance, he retained his place in the team that beat the Sydney Swans at the weekend. He again caught the eye, and has subsequently been rewarded with a contract extension.

“I signed a two-year contract, which signs me up until the end of 2019,” Glass told Hawks TV.

“The first year I’ll be on the Rookie list again, the second year I’ll be upgraded. Because of the new CBA, I’ll be able to play next year as a Rookie so it’s a win win next year and glad to be staying at the club.

“It’s pretty surreal. I’m just taking each game as they come.

“Playing at the MCG was unbelievable – Friday night lights against Sydney, it couldn’t get any bigger than that. It’s come very quickly but I’m enjoying it.”

“Conor made his AFL debut just two weeks ago and has shown he is comfortable at the level,” Recruiting and List Manager Graham Wright said of the news.

“He is a great mark, displays great intent, and has shown great skills on either side of his body. He will remain on Hawthorn’s Rookie list in 2018, with the promise of an elevation to Hawthorn’s senior list the following year.”

Glass signed for Hawthorn in October 2015, after he captained the Derry minor side to Ulster glory and lead them to the All-Ireland semi-final that same year. The Watty Graham’s clubman is joined by Meath native Conor Nash at Hawthorn.

Two other young Hawks — James Cousins and Oliver Hanrahan — have also signed contract extensions and secured their future at the club.
