DYLAN CONNOLLY HAS admitted that Stephen Kennyโs track record of working with โtop class wingers who have gone on to play internationallyโ was an important factor in his decision to swap Bray Wanderers for Dundalk.
It was confirmed last night by the reigning SSE Airtricity League Premier Division champions that Connolly has signed for the Oriel Park outfit after 18 months in Bray.
The 22-year-old has been one of the League of Irelandโs top players since he returned from a year at Ipswich Town. Heโs now hoping to become the latest winger to kickstart his career while working under Kenny.
The Dundalk boss was in charge at Derry City when James McClean and Niall McGinn were snapped up by Sunderland and Celtic respectively. Daryl Horgan also moved to the UK at the end of last season, joining Preston North End after impressing during Dundalkโs run to the Europa League group stages and a third consecutive Premier Division title.
McClean and Horgan both went on to be capped at senior level by the Republic of Ireland, while McGinn was one of Northern Irelandโs goalscorers last summer at Euro 2016.
โStephen was a massive decision in me choosing to join Dundalk,โ Connolly, a former Irish U21 international, told Dundalk FCโs official website.
โItโs no secret that he is a brilliant manager. All you have to do is look at the trophies that he has won and everything he has achieved. He has done brilliantly.
โI met him a few times and it was a no-brainer for me to work with him. He has worked with top class wingers in the past who have gone on to play internationally โ James McClean, Niall McGinn and Daryl Horgan. You canโt let the opportunity pass you by.โ
Kenny had attempted to sign Connolly from Bray when he was searching for a replacement for Horgan at the end of last season. But after signing a new two-year deal in December, Connolly said Dundalkโs offer was โnothing that interested meโ. Six months later, however, heโs finally a Dundalk player.
โI am over the moon to have signed for Dundalk,โ he said. โWhen I heard that the club were interested in signing me I was 100% on board with it and I wanted to get things done.
โWhen I knew the interest was there, I wanted to come and I wanted to get things sorted as quickly as possible and I am delighted to have got that.โ
He added: โI have had a good year and a half at Bray Wanderers. I want to thank everyone at Bray for everything they they have done for me during the last 18 months.
โI feel now is the right time for me to move and Dundalk is the best place for me to go to the next level. I think it is the best move for me at this stage of my career.โ
The transfer window doesnโt officially open until tomorrow so Connolly wonโt be eligible to play when Dundalk travel to take on Bray this evening. The Lilywhites can reduce Cork Cityโs lead at the top of the table to 12 points with a win at the Carlisle Grounds, although the Leesiders will have two games in hand.
Connolly is keen to be involved a week on Wednesday when Dundalk host Rosenborg in the first leg of their Champions League second round qualifier.
โI have never experienced European football at senior level so I am looking forward to playing in the Champions League in a few weeks. It is something I have always wanted to do so that will be really good,โ he said.
โI want to win every game. I want to do everything at the club โ get into the team, work hard and score goals. I want to win trophies at Dundalk. I just want to help the team, contribute and see what happens.โ
Peter and โmagic kellyโ if you donโt care about football or la liga then keep your opinion to yourself coz nobody cares what you think
I think the point is that the article was headlined as something of worldwide importance. Whereas itโs about a soccerball game in Spain.
Donโt think the whole world would bother their arses watching a chess game, this on the other handโฆโฆ. Barca 3-1
Man the miseries are out tonight!
Hopefully itโll be a cracker. Iโm going for Real to win 2-1.
I actually fancy barca to raise their game for it. They have a capacity to do it, as with Inter group game in 2009 without Messi
Yeah, they definitely raise their game for Real. Considering I think theyโve beaten them 6 out of the last 7 or something to that effect.
Still, Iโm feeling a Real win tonight.
Barca are 17/10. Rarely do you see odds like that on them to win a game of football. I fancy Madrid but you just donโt bet against Barca.
Well, I guess I have my answer.
We care????
Evidently, a lot of people do.
If you donโt care why bother opening the link you ignoramus? It is a match between the best two football teams in the world and I will be watching it, as will hundreds of millions of others the world over.
The headline was misleading. I only opened it it because it said the whole world would be watching, I thought it was a chess game or somethingโฆ.The whole world cares about a football game? My God, Ireland :(
I enjoy sport myself, but I wouldnโt put so much importance on a football game. Iโm pretty sure that suggesting the โwhole worldโ is watching it is a gross exaggeration. That said, hope you enjoy the game :)
Get stuffed!
Donโt comment if itโs not your thing, bigoted tosser.
Keep up lad, El Clasicos been appointment TV for years at this stage
Dearie dearie me, Magic Kelly, you poor wee thing.
i think barca will win this gameโฆ.prob 1-3 id say โฆ
Nice! Ha.
Real 3-2. I do hope Iโm wrong though.
Really starting to hate barca now. Itโs as if the gods are wearing barca shirts. That second goal was painfully waxy
Thatโs true, but they could have stuck a few more away
How can you hate them? Theyโre the best team football has ever seen. They win, but more importantly, they win the right way.
does anyone care about spanish football baaaaaaaaaaaa
In the world of โsoccerballโ or football as genuine fans call it, el Classico is of huge importance to us. If you donโt care about the game then move onto the next article without commenting and being such a dick
happy chrimbo one and all
