Eroni Vasiteri's move to Connacht is off after eye-gouging ban

The Fijian centre picked up a nine-week suspension and won’t now join the province.

ERONI VASITERI’S PROPOSED move to Connacht won’t be happening.

Last month, the province announced that the Fijian international was joining on a one-year deal — with the option of a second — to bulk up their midfielder options.

However, 28-year-old Vasiteri was handed a nine-week suspension a week ago for eye-gouging an opponent during Fijian Drua’s clash with the Canberra Vikings in the National Rugby Championship.

In a statement released this morning, Connacht have announced that he will not be making the switch to Ireland for the time being.

Connacht Rugby can confirm that following discussions with Eroni Vasiteri it has been agreed by both parties that Vasiteri’s planned move to Connacht will not now proceed,” it reads.

“Due to a recent suspension Vasiteri would not have been in a position to proceed with the move until later in the season. Connacht Rugby wishes Eroni Vasiteri every success in his future career and hope to make an announcement on an alternative signing shortly.”
