It so often materialises into a glorified friendly but with the mind games beginning particularly early this year, there is some added needle between Messrs Mourinho and Wenger.
The first bragging rights of the 2015/16 season are on the line and, quite frankly, we’ll take any competitive football at this stage.
To ease yourself back into the swing of things, here’s 6 memorable moments from the Community Shield down through the years:
Jennings scores from his own box
As far as pre-season games go, Man United and Tottenham served up as an absolute classic in 1967 when they shared the trophy after a 3-3 draw.
He may have conceded three goals but Northern Irish goalkeeper Pat Jennings proved to be the hero for Spurs as he scored from his own box.
A long punt sailed towards the United goal and bounced over his opposite number Alex Stepney. What’s more, Bobby Charlton scored twice.
We don’t expect much charity to take place between Chelsea and Arsenal this weekend and there was certainly no goodwill shown between Liverpool and Leeds in 1974.
Not only was it Brian Clough’s first match as Leeds manager but also Bill Shankly’s official farewell as Liverpool boss.
But the moment many will remember this game for was the on-field brawl between Billy Bremner and Kevin Keegan. Both players saw red and proceeded to throw their shirts to the ground before stomping off.
The Reds went onto win 6-5 on penalties – the competition’s first penalty shoot-out – after it finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Okay, maybe not. But one of the highlights (?) of Nani’s Old Trafford career was his second-half double which saw Man United come from behind at Wembley to beat rivals City 3-2.
The winger scores to make it 2-2 to round off a delicious team goal and then scored a dramatic 94th minute winger to silence the noisy neighbours.
The 1984 Charity Shield (as it was known then) between Liverpool and Everton was settled with a vintage Bruce Grobbelaar moment as his own goal handed the Toffees the trophy.
Regardless of the occasion, there will always be plenty of hostility when old foes meet and the 2003 edition at the Millennium Stadium was as fraught as it comes.
Man United eventually prevailed after an ill-tempered clash with Arsenal as the two heavyweights of the nearly-noughties drew battle lines for the year ahead.

Goals, goals and more goals
So often mundane affairs, the Community Shield can be, on occasion, lit up by moments of individual brilliance.
Whether it’s Jon Arne Riise’s mazy run and rocket against Chelsea, David Beckham’s cheeky chip in 1996 or
It’s been a long summer.
