WHAT EXACTLY WERE the Indianapolis Colts thinking?
Trailing the New England Patriots 27-21 late in the third quarter, and backed up in their own half, the Colts needed a first down to keep their challenge alive.
Instead of punting the ball away and backing their D to make a stop, they did this:
With pretty much their entire offence on the right side of the field, stand-in centre Griff Whalen snapped the ball to stand-in quarterback Colt Anderson who was, unsurprisingly, tackled for a loss by the Patriots defenders who were standing right on top of him.
The play looks like it was designed to be a ‘swinging gate’ play but the only time we’ve ever seen that come off is in the Adam Sandler film, The Longest Yard — y’know, a work of fiction.
So the most likely explanation is that the Colts were trying to draw the Patriots offside, panicked, executed a play that they were never meant to run, left America in stitches, and lost 34-27.
Not exactly what you’d class as a success.
Why can’t we comment on the Vera Pauw article down below? Afraid we might all tell a few home truth about some of the snakes in the squad?
@Dave Murray: The snakes in the squad including the manager have all got one thing in common, they all hail from Dublin.
