University Limerick leave it late to book Collingwood Cup final date with UCD

There was drama in the Collingwood Cup semi-finals today.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DUBLIN will face University Limerick in the final of the 2016 Collingwood Cup tomorrow after two dramatic semi-final ties earlier.

UCD, who have won this tournament 42 times, left it late to see off Maynooth University with Gary O’Neill’s penalty proving decisive.

The former Wolves and Port Vale midfielder converted from the spot to send his side into Friday’s decider as the Belfield outfit chase their first title since 2013.

They’ll face University Limerick at the Mardyke after Ian Sullivan’s side edged past Trinity after extra-time this afternoon.

Trailing to Brian Foley’s opener with a couple of minutes remaining, UL found a late equaliser as defender AJ O’Connor powered home a corner with just four minutes remaining.

And they then snatched victory in the dying embers of extra-time as Oisin McMenamin headed past the goalkeeper from a long throw-in.

UL will contest their first final since suffering defeat to University of Ulster Jordanstown in 2008.
