THERE WAS AN early upset at the 2016 Collingwood Cup as Queens University punished nine-man NUI Galway to advance to tomorrow’s quarter-finals.
The annual competition got underway in Cork this afternoon and there was no shortage of drama on the opening day as Queens, UCD and Maynooth University all progressed.
Six-time winners NUI Galway took the lead at Douglas Hall AFC but had two players sent-off and were made to pay.

Stephen Roden was first to be given his marching orders for hauling down Martin Ramsey in the area and Paddy Stuart duly converted the resulting spot-kick.
His effort cancelled out Niall Whelan’s opener and it was the Belfast side who went on to win the tie through David Elliott.
As Galway pushed for an equaliser, Whelan saw red and their search for a leveler fell flat despite a late goalmouth scramble.
Meanwhile, goals from Gary O’Neill and George Kelly saw UCD advance past the Royal College of Surgeons while Maynooth made light work of Ulster University.
Dylan Kavanagh, Fuad Sule, Jake Corrigan and Colin May were all on the scoresheet in Blarney.
Wednesday’s quarter-final fixtures:
UCD v Queens (Bishopstown, 2.30pm)
Maynooth v UCC (The Mardyke 2.30pm)
UL v Mary I (The Farm, 2.30pm)
DCU v Trinity (The Farm, 2.30pm)
