CORK’S CIARAN SHEEHAN made his Australian Rules comeback earlier today, lining out for the first time since last June after an injury-plagued 2016.

Sheehan played for the Northern Blues – the affiliate club of AFL side Carlton – in a pre-season game, helping them to a 73-62 win over Sandringham.

In a boost for the 26-year-old, he played the whole game and finished with 19 disposals.

‘It was good to be back out there and be fresh and give it a good crack,” Sheehan told the Northern Blues website.

“It’s a big oval out there with plenty of running to do and it is something I really needed to get through.”

Carlton announced last November during the AFL draft that Sheehan would be re-rookie listed for the 2017 season.

Having initially joined the club in November 2013, he made his AFL debut in August 2014 and made three further appearances in that campaign for Carlton.

But since then he has endured a series of injury problems. He did make four appearances for Northern Blues last June before being sidelined with injury again and missing the rest of the year.

Carlton begin their 2017 AFL campaign on Thursday 23 March against Richmond, while Northern Blues begin their VFL season on 8 April against Port Melbourne.
