IT WAS THE most famous hurling point between Clare and Limerick.
But Ciaran Carey’s epic score isn’t clearly recalled by his nephew Cian Lynch who is part of the Limerick squad that squares off against Clare in next Sunday’s Munster quarter-final.
And with good reason.
“Back in ’96, the mother always tells a great story, Ciaran got a point against Clare to win the match.
“I was only born in ’96 and I was on her breast and she threw me up. She forgot to catch me! I don’t remember that!
“I have watched it over and over again. Micheal O Muircheartaigh’s commentary makes it. It’s brilliant.”
Has the Patrickswell club man ever tried to replicate that famous score?
“I haven’t. I’ll stay away from it. I’d be creamed, I’d say.”
Last year’s Limerick minor captain admits that he always grew up hoping to emulate his uncles in the hurling arena.
“I was always watching the uncles play and aspiring to get up to wear the green jersey and follow in their shoes.
“I remember him (Ciaran) only briefly remember him playing or Limerick, more for the club. I remember in 2003, the last time we won the county final, I was mascot and another uncle was captain. That was a treat.

“That was Paul Carey and he would have won it with Kevin and Ciaran – a few of them on the team. It was a treat for me; these were my role models and my uncles.”
“Kevin, now, would have been most influential. He used to take me to matches, take me out the back for a puck around. They have been very good and even before big matches Ciaran would send a text saying the best of luck and stay focused.”

Another well-known ex-Limerick hurling star was another role model for Lynch in Patrickswell.
“Gary (Kirby) is brilliant around the club. He was over the team three years ago and he was always there or there abouts.
“Even now he’d always be there and before a game he’d tap you on the shoulder and wish you luck. Gary’s great.”
