Surprise as Cian O'Neill is appointed new Kildare football manager

Joe Quaid has also been given the nod for the hurling manager’s job.

FORMER KERRY TRAINER Cian O’Neill is the surprise choice to take over from Jason Ryan as manager of the Kildare senior footballers.

O’Neill, who won an All-Ireland title with Kerry in 2014, also has an All-Ireland hurling title to his name from his time as part of Liam Sheedy’s backroom staff in 2010.

It had been believed the former Moorefield man would stay with Kerry this season with many tipping former captain Glenn Ryan to take the reins as Kildare look to bounce back from relegation to Division 3 and heavy defeats to Dublin and Kerry in the championship.

In a busy day for the Kildare County Board, Joe Quaid was sent forward for ratification as the Lilywhites’ new hurling boss.

The former Limerick goalkeeper has managed his native county to an U16 All-Ireland title.
