After miserable debut season, Liverpool agree fee with Crystal Palace for Christian Benteke

The Belgian has travelled to London for a medical and will become the club’s record signing.

HE’S ONLY BEEN at Anfield for a season but Liverpool striker Christian Benteke is already on his way.

The Belgian is set to sign for Crystal Palace after the two clubs agreed to a fee of £27m plus 5m in add-ons.

It represents good business for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who signed the 25-year-old from Aston Villa for £32.5m last summer.

Having only started 14 games in his debut campaign, his value was always likely to depreciate but the Merseyside club have done well to, essentially, negotiate a similar price.

He did manage 9 Premier League goals last term but his future was always in doubt having failed to earn a regular starting role under Klopp.

With the German favouring quick. mobile attackers, the old-fashioned centre-forward was always likely to struggle to fit in and has been linked with a move away in the last few months.

Benteke has travelled to London for a medical and will become the club’s record signing.

Ironically, he was involved in a controversial incident in March when he earned a last-gasp penalty at Selhurst Park and then stepped up to score the winner from the spot.

Afterwards, Alan Pardew labelled him a diver.

Now, he’s signing him.
