CHELSEA HAVE ANNOUNCED the signing of US international Matt Miazga on a four-and-a-half year deal.

The 20-year-old defender joins the Londoners from MLS club New York Red Bulls for a reported £3.5million (€4.6m) after they beat off competition from a number of other Premier League clubs.

A physical 6ft 4in centre-half, Miazga made his senior debut for the Red Bulls at the age of 18 and was capped for Jugen Klinsmann’s US team back in November after choosing them over Poland, who he had lined out for at U18 level.

“I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, a world-famous club with a reputation for major success,” he said.

I am delighted to be in the Premier League, the best league in the world, and can’t wait to meet my team-mates and get going.

“I am still at the beginning of my career but I believe this is the place to develop and learn from some of the best players in the world.”

He will provide cover for captain John Terry, Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma but appears to have been bought as one for the future.
