Stephen Rochford is trimming the Mayo panel ahead of the Connacht championship.

MICKEY CONROY IS the highest-profile player to be cut from the Mayo panel ahead of their Connacht championship campaign.

Manager Stephen Rochford is yet to finalise his squad but is expected to include several players from the recent All-Ireland winning U21 team.

As a result, Conroy is one of a number of players that have been released, along with Mark Ronaldson, Mickey Sweeney and Shane McHale, according to Colm Keys in the Irish Independent.

Mayo GAA PRO Paul Cunnane confirmed to The42 that the panel is undergoing changes.

“Stephen is finalising the panel over the weekend,” he said, “that’s basically where we’re at at the minute.

“Maybe there’s one or two U21 players to come into it as well. I’d say it will all be confirmed ahead of the Connacht championship launch next Wednesday. Everything should be finalised by then, I imagine.”

Conroy has struggled to regain form since picking up a shoulder injury last year which ruled him out of the closing stages of the All-Ireland championship. The forward had failed to break into the Westerners starting line-up prior to that but was a useful option to come off the bench.

The Davitts clubman made his senior inter-county debut in 2004 and has featured in numerous All-Ireland finals since then, including the 2012 defeat to Donegal in which he scored a point.

After finishing fifth in the Allianz Division 1 league and in search of their sixth provincial title in a row, Mayo kick off their championship campaign against London later this month.
