THE PREMIER LEAGUE’S Player of the Year took up where he left off with a man-of-the-match display against Celtic in a friendly this evening.
Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez, who has been linked with a £41 million (€49m) move to Arsenal, dazzled in front of 32,500 fans in the International Champions Cup at Celtic Park — opening the scoring with a terrific goal.
Moments into the second half, the Algerian international received the ball out on the right-hand flank, stepped inside two defenders and curled the ball beyond the reach of Craig Gordon.
However, the home side levelled terms on 59 minutes through Ireland U21 international Eoghan O’Connell. Playing in a three-man defence, O’Connell, who spent the second half of last season on loan to his hometown club Cork City, stroked the equaliser into the bottom corner from 25 yards.
The game went straight to penalties at full-time and Leicester won the shootout 6-5.
Celtic face Kazakhstan club Astana away in the Champions League third qualifying round first leg on Wednesday, before playing two ICC games in Ireland — against Barcelona at the Aviva Stadium on 30 July, and versus Inter Milan at Thomond Park on 13 August.
