Carlow's St Mary's CBS lift Drummond Cup title with win against Tipperary's Abbey CBS

The Carlow side ran out five-point winners today in Croke Park.

St Mary’s CBS (Carlow) 1-14
Abbey CBS (Tipperary) 3-3

CARLOW’S ST MARY’S CBS survived a late rally from Tipperary opponents Abbey CBS before lifting the All-Ireland SBFC (Paddy Drummond Cup) title in Croke Park today.

Dublin minor Colm Hulton fired 1-2 in an impressive display while midfielders Niall Lowry (0-3) and Shane O’Neill (0-2) also starred in a dominant performance by the Carlow school.

St Mary’s only had five points to spare at the final whistle but they controlled this game with a Shane Neville goal in the 6th minute proving Abbey CBS’s only score until Josh Ryan pointed in the 48th minute.

St Mary’s were ahead 1-8 to 1-0 at the interval despite the early setback of Neville, a Tipperary minor hurler this year, crashing a shot to the net for Abbey CBS. Hulton struck their goal in the 15th minute and they had a wide array of scorers as they controlled the match.

The one-way traffic continued in the third quarter with St Mary’s reeling off five points without reply including some quality scores from James Brennan and O’Neill.

However Abbey CBS rallied impressively before the finish with Ryan moving in to act as a target man in the full-forward. He found the net in the 52nd minute with a cool finish and two minutes later won a penalty which was despatched by Daire Egan for Abbey’s third goal of the match. Time ran out on their challenge though with St Mary’s holding on to triumph.

Scorers for St Mary’s CBS: Colm Hulton 1-2, Niall Lowry  0-3 (0-2f), Shane O’Neill, James Brennan, Adam Deering 0-2 each, Ciarán Larkin, Jordan Morrissey, Ross Dunphy 0-1 each.

Scorers for Abbey CBS: Josh Ryan 1-2 (0-2f), Shane Neville, Daire Egan (1-0 pen) 1-0 each, Andrew Vance 0-1 (0-1f).
