JACK GREALISH PLAYED a starring role in Aston Villa’s Capital One Cup victory over Notts County on Tuesday evening.
The Premier League club trailed the visitors on three occasions but eventually forced the game into extra-time before sealing the win as Scott Sinclair completed his hat-trick.
Dubliner Graham Burke, who was released by Villa during the summer, was on the scoresheet for Notts County but the League One side fell just short of pulling off a shock, eventually losing 5-3.
Elsewhere, Jon Walters scored for Stoke as they were made to work for their win at Luton Town.
The League Two outfit forced the game to penalties after Cameron McGeehan’s late, late goal in normal time but the Premier League club prevailed 8-7 on spot-kicks.
Sunderland’s defensive frailties threatened to herald a shock before the Premier League side ran out 6-3 winners over Exeter City.
Jermain Defoe netted a hat-trick and Jack Rodwell bagged a brace for the hosts at the Stadium of Light – both players scoring inside the first 16 minutes before Manny Oyeleke and David Wheeler hauled the League Two outfit level.

A brilliant second from Defoe was answered by Tom McCready as a remarkable half ended with the score 3-3.
Rodwell was on hand to head the crucial seventh goal of the contest, before Duncan Watmore marked his England Under-21 call-up by getting on the scoresheet and Defoe claimed the matchball.
It meant a first win of the season for Sunderland, although manager Dick Advocaat – who named a strong side for the tie – has now seen his team concede 11 goals in four matches.

An early goal from Marnick Vermijl proved enough for Preston North End to claim the scalp of Premier League new boys Watford and book their place in the next round.
Having lost once so far this season, Championship side Preston produced a confident and accomplished display against Quique Sanchez Flores’ men, who are still searching for a first win of the season.
To compound a miserable night for Watford, Miguel Britos was sent off late on and Flores’ team must now try and regroup ahead of a daunting visit to league leaders Manchester City on Saturday.
Leicester City youngster Joe Dodoo scored a hat-trick on a dream first-team debut as they beat Bury 4-1.
The 20-year-old forward was given his chance as Claudio Ranieri named a completely different side to the line-up that drew with Tottenham on Saturday.
Dodoo made his mark in style by netting three times at Gigg Lane, with Andrej Kramaric also on target in the first half as Leicester’s impressive start to the season continued.
Premier League quality told as Swansea City beat York City 3-0 at the Liberty Stadium. Despite making 11 changes from Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Sunderland, Garry Monk’s side proved too strong for their League Two visitors, opening the scoring after just two minutes.
