History-maker Gianluigi Buffon wrote a fantastic open letter to the goal he protects

The 38-year-old has 154 Italy caps and has appeared over 400 times for Juventus.

GIANLUIGI BUFFON WAS naturally delighted after recently breaking a Serie A clean sheet record that had been in place for over 20 years.

The 38-year-old, who has 154 Italy caps and has appeared over 400 times for Juventus since joining from first club Parma for €53 million in 2001, has become a legend of the game after producing a level of consistency that has led most to consider him one of the goalkeeping greats.

To commemorate his latest achievement, Buffon — in typically idiosyncratic style — has written an open letter to the goal he protects.

According to a translation by Italian football journalist James Horncastle, the letter pays homage to his goalposts and concludes:

I was 12 when I turned my back on my goal. And I will keep doing it as long as my legs, my head and my heart will allow.”
