The legendary Gianluigi Buffon left the pitch in tears after Italy's dramatic shootout loss tonight

The veteran Juventus goalkeeper is not expected to retire from international football just yet, however.

LEGENDARY ITALIAN GOALKEEPER Gianluigi Buffon epitomised the heartache of a nation as Italy were dumped out of Euro 2016 on penalties tonight.

The 38-year-old stopper had an excellent match, but could not prevent his side losing 6-5 to Italy after a highly dramatic shootout.

And to add insult to injury, Buffon came agonisingly close to saving the winning penalty scored by Jonas Hector (see clip below).

It is not expected to be the last of the Juventus net minder in an Italian jersey, however, with the legendary goalkeeper saying earlier this year that he intends to retire after the 2018 World Cup, when he will be 40 years old.
