Watson: what does a fifth vice captain do? Alastair Grant

'First vice-captain, fifth vice-captain, whatever': Bubba added to US Ryder Cup team

Davis Love brings Watson into Ryder Cup backroom in last-minute twist.

LESS THAN 24 hours after he was overlooked for the final wildcard pick, Bubba Watson has been appointed to the US Ryder Cup team — as the FIFTH vice-captain.

Watson joins Tom Lehman, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods in Davis Love’s backroom team (because let’s be honest, four vice-captains probably wasn’t enough).

Love’s gesture comes the day after he passed up the chance to add Watson, the world number seven, to his playing team and instead opted for Tour Championship runner-up Ryan Moore with his final captain’s pick.

Moore played himself into contention with a brilliant performance at East Lake, pushing Rory McIlroy to the wire in a thrilling finish before losing out at the fourth sudden-death playoff hole.

Watson’s inclusion comes following weeks of speculation over Love’s final pick for Hazeltine, and speculation that the two-time Masters champion would be left out because he is seen as a disruption to the team dynamic.
