Brook to have surgery on broken eye socket after bruising battle with Golovkin

After a brutal five-round bout with Triple G, Kell Brook was unable to attend the post-fight press conference.

KELL BROOK HAS confirmed he requires surgery after suffering a broken eye socket in his world middleweight title bout with Gennady Golovkin.

Golovkin, considered by many as boxing’s pound-for-pound king, handed Brook — who stepped up two weights to take the fight — his first career loss over five thrilling rounds at London’s O2 Arena last night to extend his unbeaten record to 36-0.

Sheffield fighter Brook’s already perilous task was made more difficult by his injury, which forced his corner to throw in the towel, and he was unable to attend the post-fight news conference as he was taken to hospital.

Brook took to Twitter to thank fans for his support and announce that he will have an operation next week.

Brook, the IBF world welterweight champion, had alluded to the difficulty he had when interviewed in the ring post-fight.

“In the second round, he broke my eye socket,” he said. “But I was tricking him, I was frustrating him. I was starting to settle into it but when you see three, four, five of them, it’s difficult.”
