Cork dual stars Buckley and Corkery will play football ONLY on Saturday

Briege Corkery and Rena Buckley were faced with a tricky dual choice

CORK’S DUAL STARS Rena Buckley and Briege Corkery will put Ladies Football before camogie on Saturday.

The pair found themselves at the centre of an unfortunate clash between both codes when the Tesco Ladies NFL Division 1 final replay was fixed for Saturday, just hours after throw-in for the Munster camogie decider against Tipperary.

Cork camogie boss Paudie Murray described the situation as “ridiculous” this week but he has agreed to release midfielders Buckley and Corkery to the footballers, while other dual panellist Meabh Cahalane will play camogie.

The camogie showdown with Tipp will have a 4.30 start in Cashel, and will be televised live on Irish TV, before TG4 screen the football rematch with Galway at 7.30pm.

Buckley and Corkery both played against Galway in last Saturday’s drawn football decider, with Cahalane on the subs bench, and Corkery celebrated her engagement later that evening before lining out against Clare in Sunday’s Munster camogie semi-final.

Murray was in contact with football supremo Eamonn Ryan this morning, the42 can reveal, and a compromise was reached.

Murray said: “I was onto Eamonn a while ago and we’re leaving them off to play football.

“I don’t want to lose the but the bottom line is I don’t want them to be playing two matches tomorrow.

“Meabh Cahalane is with us and the two girls (Buckley and Corkery) are with the footballers.

Paudie Murray Cork camogie boss Paudie Murray admits that he's taking a gamble

“The way I look at it, I’m taking a bit of a gamble but it allows me to look at two other players and give them a chance to stake a claim for their positions.”

Murray won’t reveal his starting line up until shortly before throw-in at Leahy Park.

“At the end of the day, I don’t think the footballers can afford to be without Briege and Rena. Can we? I think we’re in for a very sticky match without them but maybe we might learn a bit more about ourselves if it’s sticky.”

Cork are All-Ireland champions in both codes and tomorrow, the camogie team will aim to secure a third successive provincial title, with the footballers in search of three-in-a-row League crowns.

Cork and Galway have both announced unchanged teams for the Tesco Ladies NFL Division 1 final replay at O’Moore Park in Portlaoise.

As expected, Buckley and Corkery have been named as the midfield pair for the Rebelettes.
