The 22-year-old joined the Tigers in August 2014 on a three-year deal but his opportunities have been limited after two separate injury layoffs.

Lenihan’s one and only appearance for Hull came 12 months ago, against Bolton Wanderers, but he has recently worked his way back to full fitness and featured for the club’s U23 side in their run to the Professional Development League play-off final.

After moving to the KCOM Stadium from Cork, the Ireland U21 international signed a one-month loan deal with Blackpool in November 2014 but it was during his stay at Bloomfield Road when he sustained a serious knee injury.

Lenihan had been drafted into Martin O’Neill’s Ireland squad during the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign in October 2014 but his progress was then halted by another setback and he went under the knife last summer.

His new deal with Hull also includes a club option to add a further year.
