This goalkeeping howler almost cost Middlesbrough in the playoffs

There was late drama, as substitute Fernando Amorebieta scored an injury-time winner.

MIDDLESBROUGH ARE ONE step closer to the Premier League after earning a hard-fought 2-1 win over Brentford in the Championship playoffs at Griffin Park tonight.

Jelle Vossen gave Boro the lead slightly against the run of play after 25 minutes, capitalising on poor marking from the hosts to head home Adam Clayton’s cross.

Andre Gray’s goal then brought Brentford level, as he charged down goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos’ clearance and slotted the ball into the empty net (see below).

There was late drama however, as substitute Fernando Amorebieta’s shot just inside the penalty area deflected into the corner of the net to give his side the advantage going into the second leg.

The first-leg of the second playoff semi-final takes place tomorrow, when Ipswich face Norwich at Portman Road (kick-off: 12.15).
