Brendan Rodgers heaps praise on Ireland's Jonny Hayes after impressive display

Hayes won a penalty for his side which led to Celtic earning a draw against Rapid Vienna.

BRENDAN RODGERS HAS singled out Ireland’s Jonny Hayes for his impressive performance in a Celtic friendly over the weekend.

Hayes won a penalty for his side during a clash against Rapid Vienna, when he was pulled to the ground in the penalty area with 18 minutes remaining in the tie.

Moussa Dembele’s goal from the spot-kick ultimately secured a 1-1 draw for Celtic.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the friendly, Rodgers praised the Irish winger for his efforts.

“He made an incredible run from deep to get onto the ball and then go and create the penalty.

“That’s what Jonny can do. He can take you up the pitch. I like players with that very fast profile in the wide areas as he can go from one end of the pitch to the other very quickly.

“He has that ability to go inside and outside and I thought he was excellent when he came on. He looked a real threat and he worked hard defensively and he’s always an outlet with his quality.”

Hayes signed a three-year deal with the Scottish champions last month, after spending five seasons at Aberdeen.

His displays throughout the season led to him getting a nomination for the the 2016/17 SFA player of the year award. He was the only non-Celtic player on the shortlist.
