Well thank God that’s over! After two full weeks packed with World Cup goodness, we’ve been lost without it for the past 41 hours. After yesterday’s rest day, however, we’re back with a bang as the hosts Brazil face a Chile side who were excellent in the group stages.

Here are the teams. As expected, Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has been rewarded for his impressive display against Cameroon and starts in place of Paulinho. David Luiz has recovered from a back problem to line out alongside Thiago Silva at centre-half.

For Chile, the influential Arturo Vidal returns after sitting out the defeat to the Netherlands with a muscle injury.

It’s an all South American day as Colombia face Uruguay (minus Luis Suarez) later tonight. The winner of this game faces whoever’s victorious in that one in the quarter-finals.

Brazil and Chile have met three times in the World Cup – in 2010, 1998 and 1962 – with Brazil winning all three. They are also unbeaten at home against today’s opponents and Chile’s last win came in Santiago back in 2000.

Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli speaking this week: “Chile always seem to end up playing Brazil at this stage, but it is no coincidence that they come out on top. They have been world champions five times,” said Sampaoli.

“It is not easy for anyone to beat Brazil but we have a chance to change history.

“A game against Brazil was always a ‘clasico’ for me because I grew up in Argentina, although now I feel more connected to the Chilean people who have been awaiting this opportunity for a long time.

“I like these kind of games. I think the whole squad is in good shape and we are capable of producing a good performance.”

Joint top scorer at these finals along with Lionel Messi and Thomas Müller is Brazil’s talisman Neymar. He’s 3/1 to score first and 4/6 to find the back of the net anytime in the game.

The teams are in the tunnel and we’re five minutes away from kick-off.

Here we go. The first couple of minutes are likely to be played at breakneck speed.

As we expected, a few late challenges have already been put in. First, Fernandinho comes crashing into Aranguiz and referee Howard Webb opts against brandishing an early yellow card. Then Neymar is double-teamed by Aranguiz and Medel.

Brazil win a corner and the ball comes out to Marcelo, who fizzes a shot wide of the post.

Neymar is receiving some treatment on the sideline after that collision but he’s okay to play on for now.

Hulk bursts into the box under a challenge from Isla but Webb waves the penatly claims away. It looks like the right call.

Brazil have now got themselves a free-kick out on the left side of the box but Neymar curls it into the hands of Bravo.

Neymar breaks clear and it looks sure to have a shot on goal. However, Medel recovers well and snuffs him out.

Mena has received the first yellow card of the day for an intentional handball and he will miss the quarters if Chile get there.

GOAL! Brazil 1-0 Chile (Gonzalo Zara own-goal 18′)

Neymar swings in the corner, Thiago Silva heads on and Luiz throws out a knee to divert it in.

Upon the replay, it appears to have gone in off Gonzalo Jara.

Neymar has this backline for pace and sets off on another strong run before dragging a shot across the goalmouth.

Phil Scolari isn’t one bit happy as Neymar is down receiving treatment again. Vidal sticks out a leg to win the ball and the Barcelona man is caught but does look to have jumped in the air a little theatrically.

Meanwhile, Fernandinho is skating on thin ice after being guilty of a number of fouls.

GOAL! Brazil 1-1 Chile (Alexis Sanchez 31′) 

We’re all-square! Brazil  criminally give away possession from a throw-in in the corner and Sanchez pounces to shoot past Cesar.

Brazil are immediately on the attack again and Oscar crosses for Neymar to head at goal but it’s goes agonisingly wide after taking a slight block. This has been great entertainment so far.

A smashing pass from Thiago Silva finds the chest of Neymar and he skips past a couple of opponents but the ball is flicked into the path of Fred, who scoops over the bar from five yards out.

Francisco Silva is the second player to go into Howard Webb’s book for a foul on Neymar.

Dani Alves has a pop from distance and Bravo is at full stretch to palm over.

Neymar is causing more havoc and gets himself to the endline before cutting a cross back for Fred. He doesn’t make the best of contact and seems to have hurt his ankle in the process.

What a block from David Luiz. Sanchez slots in Aranguiz but the Brazil defender puts his body on the line to stop a shot coming in.

As the players walk off the pitch, Fred gives Medel a patronising pat on the back of the head, which angers the Cardiff man.

Are you ready for the second half? No changes on either side so let’s hope for more of the same.

Fernandinho lines up a shot from outside the box and fires one wide after slipping at the vital moment.

GOAL DISALLOWED! Brazil have the ball in the back of the net after Hulk appears to chest the ball and bundle it in off his knee. However, Howard Webb gives a free-kick to Chile for a handball from the Zenit St Petersburg attacker – who gets a yellow card.

It has been suggested that Brazil have benefited from a number of home calls at this World Cup but that certainly wasn’t one of them.

Yellow card for Luis Gustavo, who is also out of the quarter-finals. Incredibly, Fernandinho is guilty of yet another foul but avoids a booking.

That’s a terrific save from Julio Cesar! Some nice one-touch football from Chile on the right allows Aranguiz to shoot 10 yards out but the Brazilian stopper somehow keeps it out.

Brazil are making another change. Chelsea’s Ramires comes on for Fernandinho, who limps off the pitch.

Hulk picks up possession and runs at two players, then sends in a wonderful cross to where Jo is loitering. He is favourite to score but Mena somehow manages to get back and put the striker off.

Brazil have stepped it up in the last few minutes with Oscar and Neymar twice linking up. A chipped ball is head straight at Bravo then the ball is cut back from the end line but an attempted flick is a weak one.

They have put in some shift and Chile are clearly tiring now. Hulk breaks into the box before shooting at goal but Bravo parries and the ball is eventually cleared.

We don’t sees nearly enough of that from Hulk.

Five minutes plus time added on to go.

Arturo Vidal is no doubt a leader in this Chilean team but isn’t quite at 100%  after his recent knee surgery and has just been replaced by Mauricio Pinilla of Cagliari.

Chile attack as the sign for three minutes of added time goes up. Sanchez seems to have the ball stuck to his feet but they can’t create an opening to shoot and the chance goes a begging.

Full-time: Brazil 1-1 Chile

Extra-time it is!

We’re back for another 30 minutes. Who’s got that extra bit in the tank?

Hulk storms forward and is fouled on the edge of the box. He jumps straight up and invites the home crowd to get behind them.

Jo chases down a through-ball and collides with Bravo, who has come out off his line to collect. The Chilean goalkeeper is injured after receiving a book to the arm and they win a free-kick.

Diaz blasts well wide with an ambitious effort from a long-range free-kick.

Jo finds a yard of space off Medel but then slips while shooting and the ball trickles into a relieved Bravo.

Hulk has actually improved as the game has gone on. He sends over a good cross to the back post, where Oscar can only head tamely at Bravo.

Hulk shoots from 30 yards and Bravo saves well.

Dani Alves gets booked and Chile have a free-kick on the stroke of extra-time half-time. Sanchez doesn’t trouble Cesar with the set-piece though.

Willian has been given 15 minutes to make himself a hero. The Chelsea attacker is in place of his club mate Oscar.

Jo heads over from a Neymar corner. Can we just blow it up and have penalties now please, Howard?

Gary Medel has been immense at this World Cup but cannot continue and is heading off with Jose Rojas taking his place. A warrior of a man.

Brazil camped in Chile’s half at the moment.

Neymar fouled and Willian curls free-kick into a crowd of bodies. Chile do just enough. Two to play.

LATE DRAMA! Pinilla pulls the ball out of the sky, exchanges a one-two with Sanchez and absolutely smashes a shot off the crossbar. Huge let-off for Brazil.

Ramires comes inside but can’t find the target from 20 yards.

WE’VE GOT OURSELVES A PENALTY SHOOTOUT! Don’t go anywhere.

Thiago Silva and Bravo with Howard Webb for the toss and off we go again.

I’m nervous just watching this. I can only imagine what David Luiz is going through. He’s first up…

With a huge run-up, Luiz sends Bravo the wrong way and tucks his away. 1-0 Brazil.

It’s the substitute Pinilla for Chile. HE MISSES! It’s straight down the middle and Julio Cesar bats away.

Willian next for Brazil. He checks his run-up and puts it wide!

IT’S A SAVE! Alexis Sanchez shoots low and Cesar guesses right. Still 1-0 to Brazil.

Marcelo is up. He fires high and although Bravo gets a hand, it’s in and Brazil now lead 2-0.

Chile’s Aranguiz blasts the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-1 to Brazil.

SAVED! Hulk’s effort is a poor one and Bravo blocks with his legs. Still 2-1 Brazil.

CHILE ARE LEVEL! Diaz gives Cesar the eyes and puts it down the middle. 2-2.

Here comes Neymar… AND HE SCORES!

Wow, Jara steps up and hits the post! BRAZIL ARE THROUGH TO THE QUARTER-FINALS!

That was pretty incredible. You have to feel for the Chile players, who gave absolutely everything and deserved to go further in this tournament.
