Diego Brandao wants a rematch with Conor McGregor... No, really

The Brazilian is the only person who wants to see that fight again.

DIEGO BRANDAO WILL fight this weekend for the first time since his comprehensive loss to Conor McGregor last July at UFC Dublin.

After headlining the bill at the 3Arena, the Brazilian featherweight has been relegated to the preliminary card for Saturday’s meeting with Jimy Hettes in Newark.

Given how badly things went for Brandao against McGregor, one would assume that he’d never want to cross paths with the Dubliner again. Brandao was swept aside with ease via first-round TKO, as McGregor returned from an 11-month injury lay-off in impressive fashion.

But Brandao has a slightly different take on it. Granted he stepped in as a replacement for Cole Miller, but that was on seven weeks’ notice. Hardly a last-minute call-up.

Ahead of this weekend’s return to action, Brandao told Combate that he expects McGregor to lose to reigning UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo in July. After that, he wants a shot at redemption.

“I can’t wait to see Aldo fight Conor. Aldo will take it and I hope Conor will give me a rematch after Aldo kicks his ass,” said Brandao.

“Conor has no idea what it’s like to fight for five rounds and I wasn’t trained when we fought. I’m not looking to give excuses, but he’s not all that he says he is. He didn’t get in my head when we fought, I just wasn’t there. But that’s in the past, he won, kudos to him. He earned his title shot, but he’s not all that.

“Aldo will take him down and wear him out. He is really bad at jiu-jitsu. I don’t know what was up with me, I wasn’t well, but I’ll show I can strike and grapple on my next fight. I hope Conor loses and accepts the rematch with me.”

A win against Jimy Hettes this weekend won’t get Brandao a rematch, but it might increase his chances of being featured in the EA Sports UFC game. Unfortunately for Diego, that’s the only place he’ll be fighting McGregor again any time soon.
