One of the biggest names in American sports journalism isn't getting a new contract

Bill Simmons and ESPN are set to go their separate ways after 15 years together.

BILL SIMMONS, ONE of the biggest names in American sports journalism, will leave broadcasting giant ESPN later this year, the New York Times reports.

ESPN president John Skipper said that Simmons, dubbed ‘The Sports Guy,’ will not be offered an extension when his contract runs out in the autumn.

Simmons is co-creator of the popular “30 for 30″ documentary series as well as the editor-in-chief of Grantland, a sister site for longform sports journalism.

But he fell out of favour in 2014 when he branded NFL commissioner Roger Goodell a liar during the Ray Rice domestic abuse investigation.

ESPN bosses suspended him for three weeks and now, after almost 15 years together, Skipper told the Times that both parties will go their separate ways.

It was a decision I had to make and he had to make to move forward.
